民間保険の更新・満期: Private Insurance Renewal / Maturity Notice Explained

This document is a 更新 (renewal) or 満期 (maturity) notice about a private insurance policy you hold — life, medical, cancer, auto, fire insurance, and so on — sent by the insurer or an agent. A renewal notice tells you your policy period is ending and whether to continue, review it, or how the premium will change. A maturity notice tells you the policy has matured and that, depending on the contract, you may receive a maturity benefit (満期金 / 満期返戻金). ⛔ This is NOT a government document (like national health insurance or public pension) from your city or the pension service — it concerns a private contract. Doing nothing can let coverage lapse or delay money you're owed, so first check the type of insurance, the deadline and the action needed on your own document.

Who receives it

The policyholder of a private insurance policy. Term-type life or medical policies come up for renewal after a set period; education (学資) or endowment (養老) policies send a maturity notice with details of a maturity benefit; auto and fire insurance often renew yearly. Nationality does not matter. ⛔ If an insurer you don't remember signing with contacts you urgently about 'unpaid premiums', first confirm whether the contract even exists.

What to do

  1. 1Check the sender (insurer or agent name) and which policy it concerns (life, medical, auto, fire, etc.).
  2. 2Read whether it is a renewal or a maturity: for renewal, note whether to continue and how the premium changes; for maturity, note whether there is a benefit and how to claim it.
  3. 3For a renewal, if you want to continue, complete the requested steps (consent, confirming the payment method) by the deadline. If you want to review it, talk to the agent or help desk.
  4. 4For a maturity, if there is a maturity benefit, complete the claim steps you're told (submitting forms, registering bank details) to receive it.
  5. 5If you don't understand it or are unsure about continuing, contact the insurer / agent printed on the document yourself (having your policy number ready speeds things up).

About the deadline

A renewal notice may state a deadline for the procedure or your confirmation. ⛔ After that date, some contracts auto-renew and others let coverage lapse if you do nothing — it varies by contract. A maturity notice may set a deadline to claim the maturity benefit. Exact deadlines, premiums and benefit amounts differ entirely per contract, so always check the date, amount and contact details printed on your own document. If you're unsure, contacting the insurer before the deadline is the safe choice.

Common misunderstandings

I got a renewal notice. What happens if I do nothing?
It depends on the contract. Some policies auto-renew; others let coverage lapse if you don't act. Premiums often change at renewal (typically rising with age). Check the treatment and deadline stated on the document, and ask the insurer if unsure.
It says 'maturity' (満期). Do I get money?
It depends on the policy type. Education and endowment policies often pay a maturity benefit (満期金 / 満期返戻金), while pure term-type medical policies may have none. Check your document for whether there's a benefit and how to claim it.
Is this a national health insurance or pension document?
No. This is a notice about a contract with a private insurer, separate from your city's national health insurance or the public pension. Confirm the sender is an insurer or agent.
I don't want to continue. How do I cancel?
If you want to not renew or to cancel, contact the insurer / agent yourself. Depending on the contract there may or may not be a surrender value. Before cancelling, it's wise to also discuss whether you still need the same coverage.
