Parents/guardians of children attending a school or nursery/kindergarten. It usually arrives as a printout the child brings home, or via a contact book, app or email. Nationality does not matter; if your child is enrolled, you get it. It is often written in Japanese, so if the content or deadline is hard to understand, you can check with the class teacher or the school/nursery office.
What to do

About the deadline
If the notice states a submission deadline or payment due date, act by that day. ⛔ Always confirm the deadline on your own notice. Replies about attending an event, collection due dates, and document submissions can hold things up if late. If the school lunch fee is by direct debit, make sure your account has enough balance by the debit date. When unsure, checking early with the teacher or office is safest.
Common misunderstandings
- Do I always have to reply or submit this?
- It depends on the notice. Some are just to read; others, like attendance for an event or a form to submit, need a reply by a deadline. Check for a reply slip (tear-off part) or wording like 'submit' or 'deadline'.
- How do I pay the 給食費 (school-lunch fee)?
- Usually by direct debit (auto-withdrawal) or a method the school specifies. The amount, method and debit date are on the notice. For direct debit, make sure your account has enough balance by the date.
- I can't read Japanese and don't understand the content or deadline.
- You can confirm the content and deadline with the class teacher or the school/nursery office. In particular, check whether a reply, submission or payment is needed and by when.
- I missed the submission deadline.
- Consult the class teacher or office as soon as you notice. Depending on the event or procedure, they may still be able to accommodate you. The key is to get in touch rather than leave it.
