就学援助・奨学金: Japan School-Cost Assistance & Scholarships Explained
This document is guidance or an application about 就学援助 (help with school costs) or a 奨学金 (scholarship/student loan). 就学援助 is a municipal program that helps lower-income households with part of costs like school supplies, 給食費 (school lunch) and school trips. A 奨学金 supports tuition and study costs, either grant-type (no repayment) or loan-type (must be repaid, e.g. from JASSO, the Japan Student Services Organization). ⛔ It is not a bill. In particular, if you receive a scholarship, missing the yearly 継続願 (renewal that reports enrollment and household finances) can stop next year's scholarship. 就学援助 is for households with children in elementary/junior-high school who need financial help (income thresholds vary by municipality). 奨学金 is for students entering or attending high school, university or vocational school, and their guardians. Assistance guidance comes from the school or municipality; scholarship guidance from the school or the providing body (such as JASSO). Nationality does not matter for some programs if you meet the requirements. Confirm exact eligibility in each program's guidance.

About the deadline

Always confirm the deadline on your own document. 就学援助 often has a set application window too, and missing it may mean no assistance that year. In both cases, check the deadline in the guidance and act early.

- No. 就学援助 is a municipal program that helps mainly with elementary/junior-high costs like school supplies and lunch. A 奨学金 supports tuition for high school, university and so on, in grant-type (no repayment) or loan-type (repaid). The eligibility and mechanics differ.
- What happens if I forget the scholarship 継続願?
- Next year's scholarship payment can stop even if you are eligible. Consult the school's scholarship desk or the provider as soon as you notice. The key is not to miss the renewal deadline.
- Do I have to repay a loan-type scholarship?
- A loan-type 奨学金 must be repaid, generally after graduation (interest-free and interest-bearing types exist). A grant-type generally needs no repayment. Check the guidance for which type it is.
- Can foreign nationals receive 就学援助 or a scholarship?
- Requirements vary by program, but you may qualify if you meet them. Check eligibility with the municipality for 就学援助, and the school or provider for a 奨学金. Multilingual guidance may be available.
